When Removing a Tooth Is the Healthiest Choice

Sometimes the best way to stop discomfort and prevent bigger problems is to remove a tooth that can’t be predictably restored. At our St. Louis dental practice, our team provides thorough evaluations, explains every step in plain language, and prioritizes your comfort—from numbing to after-care instructions—so you can heal quickly and return to your normal life.

Common Reasons for Extraction or Wisdom Tooth Removal

  • Severe decay or fracture beyond repair
  • Advanced infection or failed prior treatment
  • Problematic wisdom teeth (impaction, pain, swelling, or decay)
  • Crowding that affects bite or alignment
  • Gum disease–related mobility
  • Preparation for dentures or other treatment

What to Expect

  1. Exam & Plan — We review X-rays, discuss options, and provide a clear estimate.
  2. Comfort & Numbing — The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia.
  3. Extraction — The tooth is gently loosened and removed; stitches may be placed if needed.
  4. After-Care — You’ll receive written instructions for rest, cleaning, and pain control. We’ll schedule a follow-up and discuss replacement options if appropriate.

Wisdom teeth: Depending on position and complexity, we’ll review whether your case is appropriate for our office and outline the recommended approach.

You’ll be numbed with local anesthesia so you stay comfortable. Some pressure is normal. Soreness afterward is common and usually improves over a few days.

Eat a light meal (unless advised otherwise), take regular medications as directed, and arrange a ride if you’ve been instructed to. Wear comfortable clothing and bring your ID and insurance/Medicaid card.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is disturbed. Avoid smoking/vaping, using straws, and vigorous rinsing/spitting for the first few days. Follow the salt-water rinse schedule we provide.

Most patients resume routine activities within 24–72 hours, depending on the tooth and your healing. We’ll give personalized guidance at your visit.

Coverage varies by plan. We accept most PPO plans and Missouri Medicaid for covered services and provide clear estimates before treatment. CareCredit financing is available.
